Fernando Varela Ends His Career

7 Aug 2025

Fernando Varela called time on his career at the age of 37.

After a season playing for Alverca, helping the club return to the Liga with 33 appearances, three goals, and one assist, the center-back decided to retire.

He left behind a past with clubs such as Assoc. Torre, in Cascais, where he began his career, as well as Estoril Praia, Trofense, Feirense, Steaua Bucharest, PAOK, Casa Pia AC, and, finally, Alverca.

He won two Romanian League titles, two Romanian Cups, one Greek League title, and four Greek Cups. He also played for Cape Verde 52 times and participated in two editions of the African Cup of Nations – 2013 and 2015.
"It is with a mixture of gratitude and nostalgia that today I say goodbye to this stage that has given me so much: the pitch. For years, this was my second home, the place where dreams took shape, where joys were shared, and where defeats taught us the most valuable lessons. More than a sport, football was a passion that shaped me, challenged me, and made me grow as a person," Varela wrote on social media.
